F.H. King Full Cycle Frieght

F.H. King rolled our new compost pick-up program last summer.  One day each week, Compost Interns went to two housing cooperatives on campus and Porchlight, Inc, a soup kitchen and shelter, to pick up their compostable food scraps.  The most exciting part of this program is that we did our compost pick-ups by bike, hauling a 400-lb. capacity trailer in tow.  We also used this trailer to transport produce from our farm to Library Mall where we hand out fresh produce to students for free.  Our vision is that through this program we are demonstrating a possible alternative to oil-based fuel transportation.  We cycle fresh vegetables out to the community and cycle compostable food waste back to our farm to nourish our soil – hence, the name of our bicycle-based hauling program – F.H. King Full Cycle Freight.  We are looking to grow our program this year by purchasing another trailer and increasing the number of pick-up sites on our route.

You can find out more about our program in this front-page article in the Wisconsin State Journal

We are currently accepting applications for new pick-up sites.  If you are interested in having F.H. King pick up your compost by bike and transporting it to the F.H. King garden, please fill out the attached application form and return it to Micah Hahn (mbhahn@wisc.edu).  Pick-up dates run approximately April-October.
